Stop Sending Screen Shots . . . Do This Instead

Attorney Tracey Lane Russo / www.russolawct.com

Text messages are an important part of today’s family cases – equally important is making sure you get those text messages to your lawyer in a format that can be used in court. Screenshots don’t really cut it in court and, after a lot of trial and error over the years, the program I recommend to my clients who use an iPhone is from Decipher Tools – the end product I rely on most is a PDF that includes a time-date stamp on each message and maintains the “look” of a text message exchange.  The program costs about  $25 which is significantly less than you will spend if your attorney or her paralegal has to spend hours piecing together screenshots that, at the end of the day, may not be admitted into evidence because they don’t include the date and time stamp showing when they were sent and when they were viewed.

Regardless of whether you use this program or a similar one, keep in mind that the messages are exported from a backup of your iPhone that is saved to your local computer and, generally, can’t be encrypted (or I’ve never figured out how to make it work when it is).

Good luck and save yourself some money and time by sending the text messages to your lawyer in a readable and (hopefully) admissible format.
